Vorsteiner is an American tuning firm that until now has specialized in modifying German performance cars from the likes of BMW, Mercedes Benz, and Porsche. The company has now established a subdivision called Ventross that will be focused on Japanese models.
After its first business order of Lexus IS-F last year, Ventross revealed yesterday its latest customization kit for the Nissan GT-R, featuring the same high quality aerodynamics engineering and construction expected from parent company Vorsteiner.
The Ventross GT-R is modified with a sporty dry carbon fiber front chin spoiler. The spoiler features a center air channel that allows air to cool down the front brake system, while also increasing downforce. Meanwhile, the rear end of the vehicle features a lightweight dry carbon fiber boot lid with a built in spoiler that reduces the weight over the factory steel unit by up to 50%. Finally, an integrated carbon fiber rear diffuser complements the new bootlid, while also enhancing the factory stacked exhaust design. Also available in the Ventross package is a three-piece forged aluminum wheel set in 19 and 20in sizes.
According to Vorsteiner, all the aero parts are manufactured with a carbon fiber honeycomb matrix (CFHM) structure. This gives them superior stiffness, strength and durability compared to traditional hand laid carbon fiber and fiberglass materials.
The carbon fiber aero components for the Nissan GT-R are slated for market release on June 1st of this year.

Lexus IS C gets F-Sport accessories
The Lexus IS C went on sale few days ago, when the manufacturer announced that is planning to sell over 1,600 units per month. Now Lexus wanted to offer a surprise for its customers and expanded its F-Sport Performance Accessories line for the IS250C and IS350C.
The new IS C F-Sport accessories include performance enhancing parts such as forged alloy wheels, brake upgrades, suspension systems, air intake, exhaust systems and more. The parts were developed with help from Toyota Racing Development (TRD) and will be available at North American Lexus showrooms from June 1.
The new range includes 19in forged alloy wheels designed in a dark graphite finish, six-piston fixed calipers and drilled cast-iron rotors, braided stainless-steel brake lines, sports pads, and a new shock absorber and suspension spring set.
The shock absorbers and springs were co-developed with Bilstein and provide a firmer ride, increased stability and reduced body roll. Body roll and chassis flex is further reduced with the adoption of the sway bars and a chassis brace.
Engine performance is lifted with a new sports exhaust and intake system consisting of stainless-steel mufflers and double-wall exhaust tips and high-flow filters. Other pieces include a carbon-fiber engine cover, a performance clutch for manual models, as well as a quick-shift gearstick that decreases shift throw by approximately 35%.
Previously the F-Sport accessories was only applicable for the IS 250 and IS 350 sedans but Lexus has always maintained that parts would eventually be developed for other vehicles in its lineup.

Mini celebrate 50 years with the one-off George Harrison MINI
MINI celebrates 50 years of existence in 2009. A big three-day event to commemorate this milestone takes place at Silverstone in the UK from 22 May. There will be song, dance, food, racing and a whole range of other activities during the festivities.
One of the attractions will undoubtedly be the one-off George Harrison MINI which is a new interpretation of the original car that the famous Beatle owned. The car is designed with psychedelic images just like the 1966 car Harrison owned. Each of the Fab Four were given a Mini Cooper S by their manager in 1966 as a gift. Harrison got his painted in these psychedelic images in reflection of the zeitgeist of the 1960s. The Mini was even featured in The Beatles' 1967 TV movie Magical Mystery Tour.
The car will be given to Harrison's widow, Olivia Harrison. After the 50 years ceremony, it will then be auctioned off to aid Material World Charitable Foundation that Harrison started back in 1973.
"George was a huge MINI fan," said Mrs Harrison, "and he would have enjoyed creating this new version. The fact that MINI's anniversary celebrations will also benefit our Foundation has made it an enjoyable as well as meaningful collaboration."

MINI United - the world's biggest fan event - will take place at Silverstone in the UK on 22 - 24 May 2009. The festival delivers three days of non-stop entertainment for the brand's large fan community. MINI United is all about concerts, shows, car races etc., and provides the perfect stage on which to showcase the unique new MINI inspired by George Harrison.
George's psychedelic MINI in a new look
Back in 1966 The Beatles' manager Brian Epstein gave each of the Fab Four a Mini Cooper S as a gift. In keeping with the zeitgeist of the time, lead guitarist George had his car painted with psychedelic images such as yantras and Sanskrit mantras. In 1967 this legendary Mini starred in The Beatles' film Magical Mystery Tour. And now, to coincide with its latest landmark anniversary, MINI is dedicating a modern interpretation of George's car to the man himself. The MINI has been designed according to the wishes of Olivia Harrison and rekindles the look of George's famous original.

Replay signs up as MINI United partner
The denim specialist congratulates MINI on its latest landmark birthday and presents an anniversary jeans model, which will be available exclusively and in a limited edition from the Replay stand at the MINI United event. To mark the anniversary, the used-look jeans sport a circular "50 Years of MINI" sew-on badge on the front left pocket. Added to which, all the MINI staff at the festival will be kitted out in Replay jeans. Selected Replay stores are promoting the event in special window displays.

2010 Lincoln MKS EcoBoost: 17/24 MPG, 355 HP, price start from $4
The Lincoln MKS has been a sales success for Ford, with the regular V6 version launched last year racking up thousands of sales and regaining market share lost mainly to Cadillac in the recent past.
Lincoln is now expanding the MKS range with the 355-hp twin-turbocharged MKS EcoBoost sedan, which will goes on sale later this summer. The car will carry a base price of $48,585 (including an $825 destination fee), which may seem like a substantial leap over the $38,000 starting price of the base V6 model but its economy and power say otherwise.
“The Lincoln MKS EcoBoost series provides customers the best combination in style, technology and power,” said Pei-Wen Hsu, Lincoln MKS Marketing manager. “An EcoBoost appearance package also will be available, offering customers a more aggressive and sporty look that further differentiates the Lincoln MKS from other competitors.”
The Lincoln MKS EcoBoost is the first of Ford model to feature an EcoBoost powerplant but it certainly won’t be the last as Ford plans to have the option available on 90% of its North American lineup by 2012. The EcoBoost 3.5L V6 engine delivers a peak 355hp (265kW) at 5,700rpm and 350ft-lb (474Nm) of torque from 3,500rpm, as well as a substantially saving in fuel consumption.
Thanks to a combination of direct-injection and turbocharging technology, a 10-15% fuel-economy benefit is expected versus normally aspirated 4.6-liter V8 engines in the same competitive class. According to Ford, the Lincoln MKS with EcoBoost engine will deliver more power and better highway efficiency (25mpg) than the 2009 Lexus GS460 (24mpg) or 2009 Infiniti M45 (21 mpg). Initial estimates put its fuel-economy at around 17mpg in the city and 24mpg on the highway.
Standard features include 19in wheels, adaptive HID headlights, a rear-window power sunshade, and AWD. Optional goodies include 20in chrome wheels, EcoBoost badging, illuminated door sill plates, and plush floor mats.

Tesla reports 1000 pre-orders for the Model S
On March 26th, Tesla officially unveiled its drivable prototype Model S sedan--- Tesla's first all-original car, at Elon Musk's SpaceX headquarters, and opened the reservation books for the car - even though they haven't broken ground on the factory that will build it. Undeterred, over 1,000 people have made the $5,000 deposit for the car already, raising another $5 million for the car's development.
Even Tesla was surprised by the number of people willing to pony up the cash early on, when 520 people had made their reservations in the first week. "Frankly the number of cars reserved in the first week has exceeded our optimistic internal projections," said Tesla CEO, Chairman and Product Architect Elon Musk. "Enthusiasm surrounding the Model S is proof that there's pent-up demand for more affordable, fuel-efficient vehicles - including those made in America."
As interest in the Model S continues to show strength, Tesla has shifted to extolling the virtues of the electric sedan. “The Model S is a better value than much cheaper conventional cars,” said Musk. “Despite the enormous environmental benefits, lower total cost of ownership will soon become the primary motivation for consumers to evolve from gas guzzlers to EVs.” The Model S's lower total cost of ownership relies on higher priced - above $5 per gallon - gasoline. At current rates, the calculation isn't so favorable. But it at least seems reasonable to assume fuel prices will rise again once the economy rights itself.
To get from here to production, however, the company has applied for a $350 million loan - peanuts compared to the major carmakers, but still a tough sell, especially for a completely unproven product - from the U.S. government's Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing Program.
Tesla added further excitement to its new Model S by announcing a Signature Edition, which will be built in a run of 2,000 cars that will be split evenly between U.S. and European customers. The Tesla Model S Signature Edition will be the first built cars and will come with unique interior and exterior features. To reserve one Tesla will need a $40,000 deposit for this special model.
The Model S's statistics are likely what drove the early interest - at 5.5 seconds to 60mph, 300mi range and an incredible price of $57,500 before $7,500 in tax credits, the car offers inexplicable value, especially considering it will be built in California. And that's before you get to the car's technological feature list.
More information unveiled on March 26th:
A quick run-down of the car's stats reveals the Model S will carry on the Roadster's mantle of green performance, while expanding considerably on its utility: a 300mi (480km) range is complemented by an expected 0-60mph (96km/h) time of 5.5-6.0 seconds. There's even work being done on an optional 600mi (960km) extended-range battery pack. Despite the range of the 300mi pack, Tesla is claiming a 45 minute quick-charge time. The battery pack itself will be warrantied for 7-10 years, while the car will be warrantied separately for a period of 3-4 years.
The official photos of the car reveal an exterior more or less as expected, though the flavors of Jaguar, Maserati and Karma are more upscale than its price would suggest. Tesla's hiring of Mazda's former chief designer for the project probably explains that, however. The unfinished interior shown in leaked photos threw the 'drivable' aspect of the prototype into doubt, but the official shots reveal a car that is in fact ready to run - though probably not ready for volume production.
A huge central screen area will house a haptic (read: touch feedback) touchscreen interface, while a second LCD serves as the instrument panel. The presence of such a huge display hints at the highly reconfigurable nature of the system, perhaps even allowing customized gauge and feature layouts. Again, this feature seems to be well beyond the $57,400 price tag of the Model S. A unique interior configuration allows seating for seven with the installation of a pair of child-sized jumper seats in the rear of the car.
The car will also have a few high-tech and high-performance toys that further build the mystery of just how so many features fit into the price tag, including full-time 3G connectivity with Internet, HD and satellite radio, a six-piston front and four-piston rear Brembo brake system, 21in wheels and LED/neon head and tail lights.

Spy shots: Next-gen Jaguar XJ disguised as BMW prototype
Jaguar is taking a big step and consequently a big risk with the upcoming XJ grand luxury saloon. Now Jaguar is only months away from revealing its next-generation XJ saloon, which is scheduled to debut on July 9th at a special presentation in London before going on sale by the end of the year. Speaking at the Shanghai Motor Show last month, Jaguar Mike O'Driscoll released some new details about the upcoming flagship, including an official teaser, and now we have new spy shots of the upcoming saloon.
Interestingly, Jaguar has attempted to disguise the prototype as a BMW, even adopting the same psychedelic camouflage material as its German rival. Despite the attempted trickery, this latest prototype is the most revealing yet, clearing showcasing the new profile of the car and a few styling details.
The new XJ will be the first model to feature the next-generation of Jaguar's aerospace-inspired aluminum body architecture, and it will be available with the carmaker’s latest 3.0L V6 turbodiesel and 510hp 5.0L supercharged petrol V8. A plug-in hybrid variant is also rumored to be launched one year after the regular model, though no confirmation has been made on this yet.
As indicated by the previous teaser, Jaguar designers have focused on alleviating many of the current XJ’s criticisms – namely the outdated styling and lack of engine options. One insider who had seen concept sketches for the car described it as looking like the C-XF’s features had been draped over an Aston Martin Rapide.
Previous spy shots revealed that the headlights will likely share some traits of the company's highly regarded XF sedan, though the rear could get fully-modern LED units of a unique design, possibly sharing hints of the Bentley Continental GT Flying Spur – one of the cars Jaguar would eventually like to rival with its new XJ.
High-tech features inside are said to include pressure sensing buttons, combined with backlit glass panels and the retracting transmission selector knob used in the XF.
Jaguar will start accepting orders for the new XJ in July with the first deliveries scheduled to begin early next year.

Report Nissan still working on convertible Murano
Last August, InsideLine reported Nissan was working on a convertible variant of the Murano crossover but nothing was heard since - until today. The report appears credible, indicating that the vehicle will be sold as 2011 Murano convertible, and will be produced in limited numbers, feature a retractable soft-top and will be packing the same 265-hp, 3.5-liter V6 and CVT to send power to either the front wheels or all four. Perhaps most interesting, the Murano convertible will supposedly get a two-door configuration, making it a sort of SUV-crossover-roadster. It's beginning to sound like a venture into mythical creature territory.
But who can forget the stunning success that is (was) the Chrysler PT Cruiser Convertible, or the Audi Cross Cabriolet quattrso concept, which managed to take all the glory of German engineering and Audi design and still come up with something no one in their right mind would buy.
Here's hoping Nissan manages to beat the odds with the Murano convertible - if it is in fact to be built.

Audi will unveil next-gen A8 in November
2009 will be very busy for Audi as the carmaker is not only launching the V10-powered version of the R8, the new TT-RS, the A5/S5 Cabrio, A5 Sportback, A4 Allroad, the S4, and a Q7 facelift, but also the new A8.
The current Audi A8 has been on sale since 2003 and since that time has only received a minor facelift to keep it fresh alongside the updated Mercedes Benz S-Class, Lexus LS and new BMW 7-series. The minor styling changes implemented during the recent facelift will have to soldier on for at least another year as the next-generation ‘D4’ A8, according to Audi CEO Rupert Stadler, won’t arrive until the second half of next year as a 2011 model.
Speaking at the carmaker’s annual meeting, Stadler said the new A8 will be “the sportiest luxury sedan in its class" and that it will be unveiled for the first time in late November. Pricing hasn’t been announced but don’t expect much to change from the $74,875 starting price for the current 4.2L V8 model.
Recent reports have speculated that Audi may introduce a new four-cylinder version overseas. While this model will almost certainly miss out on a U.S. launch, a smaller V6 option may be heading Stateside for the first time and this could see the starting price of the range actually fall from current levels.
A prototype for the car has been spotted undergoing cold weather testing on a number of occasions, but always hidden beneath the current D3 body. Tell-tale signs that the prototype was the next-generation model included extended fender flares, a stretched wheelbase and wider track.
As the rendering suggests, the design of the new model will be an evolution of the current car. The aluminum spaceframe body will carry over, saving engineers more than 150kg compared with a conventional steel body. The car’s final curb weight is expected to range from between 3,630lb (1,650kg) and 4,180lb (1,900kg) depending on the model specification. The newest rendering diverges somewhat from earlier previews of the car with new slotted lower air intakes in the front air dam and redesigned LED-edged headlights.
Distinguishing features will be a large single-frame grille, LED daytime running lights and a coupe-like profile. In a previous interview, Audi's chief designer Stefan Sielaff explains: "The first generation was very dogmatic and product-design-like. With the second generation, the theme was 'elegance'—softer, flowing lines. The upcoming third generation will be stronger, sharper, and more precise."
Sielaff also revealed that the new A8 will be “the first of a new styling language at Audi”.

Toyota launches new build-your-own Prius configurator
Last month Toyota has released official pricing for the 2010 Prius, starting at $21,000, or about $1,200 over the Honda Insight, and now Toyota has officially launched the online configurator for the 2010 Prius, which allows you to create your own hybrid with exactly the options you want and find out just how much it's going to cost.
Here it is. Starting with the Prius II (there are five levels, Prius I through Prius V, the Prius I still unannounced), which is expected to be the most popular model, the $22,000 base price grows to $25,674 with the addition of just the leather interior upgrade (including leather-faced seats) and the Vehicle Stability package, which adds a smart key system, stability control, a backup camera, auxiliary audio input and MP3/WMA playback - all core features for most buyers. And that's without any options like cargo nets ($51), carpet mats ($199), wheel locks ($67), or an XM satellite radio receiver ($449).
While the Prius remains popular around the world, in Japan the cheaper second-generation Honda Insight hybrid is achieving triple its monthly sales targets despite the doom and gloom surrounding the global economy. Furthermore, with a starting price of just $19,800 in the U.S., analysts are expecting the Insight to perform similarly in local showrooms.
To combat the Insight - at least in Japan - Toyota is selling the current Prius alongside the third-generation model as a cut-priced model. The company has also slashed prices on its new, improved and more feature-packed new 2010 Prius to nearly match that of the Insight. Prices start at $21,000, though the model expected to prove most popular, the Prius II, starts at $22,000. The configurator doesn't yet allow you to price out your own bargain-basement Prius I.
"The 2010 Prius delivers outstanding mileage, performance and advanced technology at a great price," said Bob Carter, group vice president and general manager of the Toyota Division. "This [$22,000] model provides more than $2,000 added value, including the features most buyers want, at the same price as the current base model," he said.
Five trim levels are available, Prius I through Prius V. The Prius I is the $21,000 model and offers a minimalist - but still unannounced - feature set, while the Prius II starts at $22,000 and adds a host of features including electronically adjustable driver's seat, keyless entry and more. Prius III bumps base pricing by another $1,000, and the Prius IV adds $2,800, starting at $25,800. The top-end Prius V starts at $27,200 and includes 17in alloys and foglamps, but navigation is still an optional extra available for $1,800 on the Prius III and higher.

Fisker plans third Karma variant and new low-cost model
Fisker CEO Henrik Fisker feels like the automotive world is at the beginning of a renaissance, and he believes now is the first time in 40 years that start-up automakers can compete and even thrive against the established OEMs.
Fisker is less than a year away from launching its new Karma plug-in hybrid luxury saloon, arguably one of the most stylish looking cars on the auto show circuit, not to mention one of the cleanest too. It’s said that Fisker will have its Karma on the roads this November and a sexy convertible version by 2011.
Never one to rest on its laurels, Fisker is already looking towards developing a third variant of the Karma, as well as a new low cost model. Fisker has already convinced investors to pump another $85 million into its operations, with the money to be used for the development and manufacture of the Karma, as well as the new models. The funding has been sourced from investors all around the globe and includes New York-based 'Eco-Drive Partners', a European-American investment consortium, and Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, an early investor in Fisker.
Fisker is also in the process of seeking an undisclosed loan amount from the Department of Energy (DOE), which it hopes to use for the low-cost model as well as the refurbishment of an existing U.S. factory to build the cars.
Speaking with the Oakland Press, Henrik Fisker said this model will be on the roads within the next three years if the loans are approved. The car might not be a strict plug-in hybrid for the masses as the Chevrolet Volt and the Tesla Model S are being marketed as, but rather a more premium plug-in hybrid to round out Fisker’s model lineup and pull in more buyers.
However, before the low-cost model, Fisker will launch a more practical and family-oriented version of the Karma. No other details have been released about this car but expect a detuned version of the Karma’s ‘Q-Drive’ powertrain feature in it.
The Karma will go on sale in the U.S. this November with a starting price of $87,900 and will hit European showrooms in the second quarter of next year priced from €78,780. Fisker, together with independent vehicle manufacturer Valmet, plans to build up to 15,000 Karmas per year, half of which will be sold in the U.S. and the other half in Europe.

AEV making Jeep J8 MILSPEC available for U.S. civilians
The J8 is one of the toughest vehicles in the world and, until now, it was only sold to foreign militaries and governments. Good news, then. American Expedition Vehicles – normally purveyors of American-made aftermarket off-road parts and equipment – has entered into an agreement with Chrysler that will allow AEV to sell fully assembled J8 kits as the AEV J8 MILSPEC in the United States.
Though American civilians can get their hands on the stripped-down, beefed-up super-Jeeps, there are some steps to go through before it'll be road-ready.
These aren't aftermarket conversions of civilian equipment either - these are the real-deal, military-grade Jeep J8s that are being sold overseas. They are available in either three-door or five-door variants, but both are built on the same Wrangler Unlimited platform.
"Hardcore off-road enthusiasts have been asking for a vehicle like this for years, no frills and setup for a choice of diesel or V8 power and built with extra heavy-duty components,” said Dave Harriton, CEO of American Expedition Vehicles. “It’s certainly not for everyone, but that’s all part of the appeal. Being able to offer even limited quantities to the American public is really a dream come true for AEV. First, it’s a perfect match with our niche manufacturing and distribution channels, and second, the J8 is a unique part of history that we’re proud to be part of."
The AEV J8 MILSPEC will be sold as a component rolling chassis. The vehicle is meant for off-road use, and as typical for component vehicles the engine and transmission will be installed by the buyer or at the buyer's direction by an independent contractor. Although AEV does not provide the powertrain, there are a number of independent AEV dealers that can supply and install either a 2.8-liter diesel engine or a 5.7-liter V-8 HEMI® engine and transmission package.
The AEV J8 MILSPEC will be assembled in Detroit by AEV. The complete rolling chassis will be delivered painted, upholstered, fully instrumented and will include ABS brakes, heavy duty suspension and axles, exhaust, wheels and tires.
The J8 gets a range of upgrades over a standard Jeep, including a Dana 44 front and Dana 60 rear axles, plus rear leaf springs and a heavy-duty frame that together boost the J8's tow capacity to 3,500lb and payload rating to 2,500lb.
Right now, however, AEV is simply taking orders through its site. Once it has enough to begin production, a $10,000 deposit will be due in order to secure your place in line. No word yet on final pricing, though AEV says owners should expect a total investment of about $50,000.

Spy shots :next-gen 2012 Volkswagen Passat
Volkswagen's next-generation 2012 Passat is expected to up the stakes against Germany’s luxury carmakers, with the car’s designers hoping it will be mentioned in the same breath as the BMW 3-Series, Mercedes Benz C-Class and Audi A4. Photographers have caught it undergoing testing on Germany's famous Nürburgring.
While the test-mule wears the current Passat body, we can see slight modifications in the form of wider wheel wells and lengthened B-pillars. This clearly indicates that the next generation Passat will be longer and wider than today's model. Clear giveaways on this test-mule are the extended wheel arches and a stretched B-pillar.
Under the hood, a replacement for the VR6 engine will be in place, putting out close to 300hp (224kW) from a displacement of 3.0L. To improve mileage and maintain power, the new engine will also be using direct injection, while the rest of the powertrain lineup is expected to benefit from some form of forced induction as well. Other models will include a new hybrid as well as a high-performance diesel with AWD.
To give the Passat some much needed panache, VW will be pulling out all the stops to make the next-generation a technological showcase, with features that should have the traditional German manufacturers feeling a little worried.
Expected to debut in late 2011 as a 2012 model, the next-generation Passat is tipped to feature a host of new technologies, including airless tires, a wiperless window cleaning system, and an advanced user interface. There may also be an electronic stability system with a feature that automatically offers counter-steering assistance in adverse driving conditions.
One year after the launch of the Passat sedan will be the station wagon. This will be followed closely by a new high-performance model to replace the current R36.

Spy shots: Mercedes Benz SLS AMG ‘Gullwing’ up close
The successor to the Mercedes Benz SL Gullwing (and replacement for the SLR) has been spotted in prototype form in and around Germany’s Nurburgring test circuit for several months now, but what only a select few knew is that the car is being developed completely in-house by Mercedes’ official tuner, AMG. Thus, the brand new model will be called the SLS AMG when it hits showrooms in the first half of next year.
In the lead up to its final unveiling, planned for later this year, Mercedes has released a ton of info on the car, including several images of actual prototypes and technical drawings. As the successor to the legendary SL Gullwing from the 1950s, the new SLS AMG will also feature gullwing doors but picks up a new aluminum spaceframe to provide an almost perfect front-to-rear weight distribution of 48-to-52%.
Powering the SLS will be a revised version of AMG’s now-familiar 6.2L V8 mated to an all-new 7-speed dual-clutch transmission mounted on the rear axle. Peak output will stand at 571hp (420kW) and 479lb-ft (650Nm) of torque. Changes to the engine include a new magnesium intake with eight separate velocity stacks, two electronically controlled throttle plates, a high-flow exhaust and a new dry-sump lubrication system.
The engine will be located up front but will be mounted behind the front axle for better weight distribution. The SLS’s final kerb weight will be around 1,620kg, and with the V8 engine it should be able to accelerate from 0-100km/h in 3.8 seconds and reach a top speed in excess of 315km/h.
As for the new dual-clutch gearbox, the unit was developed by AMG and boasts fast gear changes with no loss of tractive force. The driver has a choice of four different driving modes, ranging from comfortable to extremely sporty, as well as a ‘RACESTART’ function. The suspension set-up is equally advanced, with double wishbones and hub carriers made of lightweight forged aluminum. Stopping power comes from carbon-ceramic discs, and these are mounted within 19in light-alloy wheels.
The car’s dimensions have also been revealed, measuring in at 4.65m in length, 1.95m across and just 1.25m in height. The wheelbase stretches just 2.7m. Previous renderings give us a clue as to what the new car could look like, showing a vented bonnet and a new headlight design not seen on any previous Mercedes models.
Furthermore, new shots of the interior show a familiar Mercedes steering wheel and a unique dash fitted with silver accented controls similar to that used in the current SLR supercar. Another interesting feature is the retro styled air-vents, which look similar to the units used by Mercedes Benz during the 1970s. The COMAND system knob located on the center console is also identical to the units used by other Mercedes models.
Premium materials abound on every surface, with materials such as nappa leather, solid metal and (optional) carbon-fiber facings emphasizing the ‘custom-built’ nature of the car. Seating will be strictly limited to two.
The price of the SLS is expected to be roughly $300,000 with production numbers likely to fall between 3,000 and 5,000 units per year. This should see it compete nicely with cars like the Lamborghini Gallardo and Ferrari F430.

Porsche wins 'most recommended brand' title, Japan and Detroit dominate 'most recommended vehicles'
According to a survey performed by marketing research firm AutoPacific, Porsche wins 'most recommended brand' title with a recommendation rating of 91 percent.
The survey, which was given to around 25,000 people who had bought cars between September and December 2008, asked the simple question of whether or not purchasers would recommend their new vehicle to a friend or relative. The respondents were given just three choices: 'Yes, definitely', 'Yes, with reservations', or 'No'.
The survey also determined what America's most recommended cars were in each segment, with some surprising results. Interestingly, European manufacturers were relatively hard to find on the list, while Japan dominating the passenger vehicle segment and Detroit winning a number of categories in the light truck/SUV segment.
When it comes to individual models, all of Porsche’s vehicles did well, but the top spot actually belongs to Infiniti’s G37. An amazing 95 percent of new G37 buyers would recommend that their friends buy the same car. This result also gave the G37 the title of most recommended Aspirational Luxury Car.
In the luxury car category, the Premium Luxury segment was dominated by the Lexus LS. Toyota also took home the most recommended in the Large Car category for the Toyota Avalon, the Premium Mid-Size Car category for the Camry, the Luxury Mid-Size Car category for the Lexus ES, the Image Compact Car category for the Prius, the Minivan category for the Sienna, the Compact Pickup category for the Toyota Tacoma and the Premium Mid-Size Sport Utility category for the 4Runner.
In total, Toyota took the most class wins with eight, while Ford scored six “Most Recommended” wins and Honda took home three.
Not surprisingly Ford took home the top spot for Large Light-Duty Pickups with the F-150 and Large Heavy-Duty Pickups with the F-Series Super Duty. The Mustang took home the spot as the most recommended sporty car, while the Flex and Edge won for the Large Crossover SUV and Premium Mid-Size Crossover SUV categories.

Toyota’s hydrogen fuel-cell car coming in 2014
Bio-ethanol, biodiesel, E85, pure electricity - there are almost too many "alternative" fuels out there already, but hydrogen is shoving its way into the room. Honda's FCX Clarity fuel cell vehicle has grabbed lots of headlines, as has BMW's combustion-powered Hydrogen7 and Mazda's rotary RE line of vehicles, including the RX-8. But Toyota is working on a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle too, and it could be on the streets by 2014.
The company had previously released plans to have a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle on the road by 2015, but that schedule has been bumped up a year to meet the incentives within California's Zero Emissions Vehicle mandate. Toyota has already shown a hydrogen hybrid prototype in the form of the Highlander.
“So much of what happens is directly related to the California ZEV mandates — they’re followed by at least 14 states, and they affect nearly half of the cars on the market in the United States. Phase IV of the mandates covers model years 2015 through 2017, so that means we could begin complying in late 2014," John Hanson, a Toyota spokesperson, told the New York Times.
California's ZEV scheme has previously influenced Toyota and other carmakers, including General Motors, to introduce zero-emissions vehicles, including the RAV-4 EV and the much-discussed EV-1.
This time around, the monetary benefits to California's program are such that it's now a valid business case for Toyota to build the hydrogen fuel-cell car.

Preview: Sporty Mini Cooper Speedster
Mini has been a giant success story for BMW, with the iconic little cars becoming almost ubiquitous throughout cities these days. With brand success comes more models, and BMW has already capitalized on the Mini name in a big way with new variants such as the Clubman as well as an upcoming crossover model, and this trend is likely to continue with the introduction of a possible two-seater convertible speedster.
There has been speculation about a two-seater convertible Mini for some time, and according to latest reports the car has been given the green light for production.
Making the car a strict two-seater means that BMW can use the same platform that the Mini Cooper Cabrio currently sits on. With the back seats removed, the Speedster should have a decent sized boot, and BMW will be able to easily mix and match engines and other parts from its current stock for the eventual Speedster lineup.
At the front, Mini’s now hallmark bonnet will likely appear with a split grille, however, the speedster will be much sportier than the current range of Mini models. This means the speedster will likely be lower and wider than its four-seat siblings and will definitely be the most aggressive Mini of the bunch.
The car will most likely have a soft-top to keep weight down, but a removable hard-top should also be available. Under the hood, expect to see the plethora of engines that are currently seen in the MINI Cooper - including the 173hp (129 kW) 1.6L turbo engine found in the Cooper S.
While BMW is yet to confirm its production, a launch date for the car is rumored to fall sometime in 2011.

2010 Opel Astra Revealed: Debut at this September’s Frankfurt Motor Show, Sales Start this Fall
Opel has reveal the 2010 Opel (Vauxhall) Astra with high-res photos and a few key details. The car will make its official world debut at this September’s Frankfurt Motor Show, before arriving in European showrooms by the end of the year.
The new Astra is crucial for Opel as it will need to recover market share lost by the current model to Ford’s strong-selling Focus hatch as well as fend off the Fiesta compact. Depending on the market, the new Astra will go on sale in Europe this fall. And whether the Astra will make it across the Atlantic and arrive in one form or another in U.S. showrooms due to the instability in GM's current situation and of course, the pending sale of the American automaker's stake in the Opel / Vauxhall brands. This is the sixth generation of the Astra, which comes almost 30 years after the launch of the original, and its styling was led by Mark Adams, the British designer responsible for Opel’s award-winning Insignia. Clearly influenced by the Insignia, the new Astra has spent over 600 hours in the wind tunnel, benefiting performance, economy and overall refinement.
Beneath the car’s pretty sheet metal is a 4.4 metre-length body and an updated GM Delta platform with a 71 millimetre-longer wheelbase. Wider tracks front and rear feature, as does a new rear axle design, which not only improves stability and agility but improves ride and comfort as well. Enhancing ride quality further is the addition of Opel’s FlexRide adjustable damper settings, which allows drivers to select between standard, sport and tour suspension modes. Another special feature is adaptive bi-xenon headlights.
The highlight of the new Astra’s powertrain line-up is the introduction of an all-new, 138hp (103kW) turbocharged 1.4L petrol unit, which builds on Opel’s commitment to engine downsizing and reduced emissions and fuel consumption. This engine joins three further petrol engines, which range from 98hp (74kW) to 178hp (132kW), and four diesel engines ranging from 94hp (70kW) to 158hp (118kW). All engines are Euro 5 compliant.
Opel is also expected to launch a new two-mode hybrid version although it won’t arrive until the end of 2010. Opel's own brand difficulties, including a partial sell-off of GM's interest, could slow development down, however.
The Astra is based around the latest version of GM’s Delta FWD compact platform and will once again be available in coupe, three and five-door hatchbacks and wagon, as well as a sedan in select markets. Since the Delta platform is shared with the Chevrolet Cruze, which will be built at GM’s Lordstown Ohio plant, there’s the possibility that an Astra under one of GM's other brand banners, such as Buick - could also be manufactured in North America to keep costs low. There’s yet to be any official confirmation, however.
Preview: Opel Insignia 'GTC' Coupe
GTC is the name of the sport versions for Opel. We’ve already seen Opel expand its Insignia lineup with the Hatchback and Sports Tourer, as well as the more recent OPC performance variant, but there’s one more model in the works that’s destined to be the most exciting and extreme. The model in question is a new coupe variant based on 2007’s stunning Gran Turismo Coupe (GTC) concept car, naming Opel Insignia 'GTC' Coupe.
This computer generated rendering gives us a good indication as to what the new model will likely look like, suggesting the dramatic styling of the original GTC concept will be toned down significantly. Don’t despair, as some of the concept’s aggression will be reserved for a high-performance OPC version of the Insignia Coupe packing the same 325hp (242kW) turbocharged 2.8L V6 engine as the Sedan.
Another cool feature will be Opel’s new ‘HiPerStrut’ (High Performance Strut) front suspension system, as well as an electronic limited slip differential. The HiPerStrut system will be unique to the OPC model and serves two primary functions: firstly, to reduce torque-steer, but also to maintain negative camber during cornering, thereby improving grip levels in wet or dry conditions.
Lesser models will borrow other powerplants from the Insignia range, including four-cylinder and V6 options. Diesel engines may also be offered, as well as an EcoFLEX version, though this latter option is unlikely to make production due to low demand.
Given its current ‘sale’ status, Opel’s priorities right now lie in finding a suitable buyer for the brand but once the dust settles work on the new Insignia Coupe will continue. Expect its launch to fall late in 2011 or early 2012.

Details of Aston Martin first complete One-77 supercar
The era of epic supercars is certainly not over at Aston Martin, with the carmaker finally took the wraps off the first completed One-77 at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este at Lake Como, Italy, where it also took the event’s top design prize, Apr 2009. While the aesthetics of this new Aston have drawn decidedly mixed reviews, there is no doubt that it is a striking machine.
Aston Martin’s European operations chief Marcel Beci revealed in March that the first actual customer car will roll out of the company’s Gaydon factory later this year and that the limited production run of just 77 cars will be complete by the end of 2010.
Beci also explained that Aston Martin keeps in close contact with all its One-77 customers, and that every effort is being made to ensure the car does not fall prey to resellers who may attempt to profit from it. After all, the One-77 is being built not just as a halo car, but as an ultra-halo car, a sort of rekindling of the legacy of Aston Martin, plus a projection of the brand into the future. It's designed to be the most quintessential Aston Martin ever, and the most perfectly personalized car available.
The structural core of the One-77 is a lightweight and immensely rigid carbon-fiber monocoque. Conceived and designed at Aston Martin's Gaydon HQ, the monocoque, or 'tub', has been built in partnership with Multimatic (MTC) – a world leader in carbon composite technology.
Attached to this tub is a set of double wishbones at each corner, with pushrods employed to transfer vertical suspension movements to the horizontally mounted spring/damper units.
The dampers are fully adjustable and feature advanced Dynamic Suspension Spool Valve (DSSV) technology - a world-first for a road car application. These special valves use high-precision machined components to enable the shock-absorbing characteristics of the damper to be changed without having to remove them from the car.
Underlining the truly bespoke nature of the One-77, the car's suspension characteristics will be precisely set-up by Aston Martin engineers to suit the owner’s exact requirements.
The One-77's power unit is an extreme evolution of the 6.0L V12 engines fitted to the DBS, DB9 and new V12 Vantage models. The brief for engine team was to take the 6.0L V12 as far as it could go, both in terms of output and weight reduction. The targets were a power output of no less than 700hp (522kW) with a 10% reduction in engine mass. Incredibly, the Aston Martin and Cosworth engineers who worked on the powertrain achieved a mass reduction of some 25% while increasing displacement to 7.3L.
Wearing Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires (255mm up front and 335mm up back) developed specifically for it, all 700hp is transmitted to the road through the rear wheels via a new six-speed gearbox. Controlled via column-mounted paddles behind the steering wheel, this robotised sequential manual is a new generation of Aston Martin's familiar automatic.
Stopping power comes from a set of carbon-ceramic discs and uprated calipers designed to transmit less heat from the brake pads into the brake fluid.
With a projected weight of 1,500kg the One-77 will occupy the very highest echelons of road car performance. Top speed is predicted to be in excess of 200mph, with a 0-60mph time in approximately 3.5 seconds.
The custom-built nature of the One-77 echoes personalization programs recently undertaken by Lamborghini and Ferrari. Buyers will be able to customize every single part of the car, from the gearbox to the interior trim elements. Even the seats will be tailored to fit the driver and passenger’s individual curves. As the company CEO Ulrich Bez explains, the car should fit the owner like a tailored suit.

Spy shots: 2011 Aston Martin V12 Vantage Roadster
Aston Martin knows how to crank out the variants like few others automakers. The convertible version of what’s arguably one of the world’s most beautiful and exciting cars has been spotted for the first time in prototype form, ahead of a market launched planned for early next year. The new car is the V12 Vantage Roadster.
The new 2011 Aston Martin V12 Vantage Roadster, add to the limited-edition V12 Vantage coupe and its endurance racing counterpart, but sadly, just like its recently revealed hard-top cousin, U.S. customers are likely to miss out due to legal issues stemming from its engine and crash safety.
The V12 Vantage Roadster will be almost identical to the hard-top except for its three-layer fabric roof that can be opened or closed in just 18 seconds by pressing a button on the center console. Obvious signs that this prototype is the high-performance V12 variant are the unique carbon-fiber body parts both at the front and rear.
Under the hood is the now familiar 6.0L V12 engine, the same unit from the DBS flagship. Output has been left untouched, which means the engine churns out up to 510hp (380kW) and 420lb-ft (570Nm) of torque. Performance will be slightly down on the hard-top, however, because of extra weight brought on by strengthening of the roofless chassis.
Drive will be sent to the rear wheels via a six speed manual gearbox, and Aston Martin’s new Touchtronic automatic may also be offered as an option. Other goodies include a new limited slip differential, a final drive ratio of 3.71:1, and an alloy torque tube with a lightweight carbon-fiber propeller shaft.
Deliveries of the hard-top are scheduled to start at Aston Martin’s global headquarters in Gaydon, UK, in the third quarter of the year, while the new Roadster should arrive early next year.

Spy shots: Maserati GranTurismo Spyder
Maserati officials have confirmed the convertible version of the GranTurismo called GranTurismo Spyder will arrive in showrooms by March of next year. And now spy photographers have caught the Maserati GT Spyder testing in the rain.
Maserati is yet to reveal if the car will sport a traditional canvas roof or a new hard-top, but according to most sources it will come with a conventional soft-top in order to keep weight as low as possible. The latest spy shots and renderings below give us a good indication as to what the final styling may look like.
The new Spyder is also expected to be priced from $130,000 in the U.S., pitting it perfectly against rivals like the Mercedes Benz SL, Aston Martin Vantage Roadster, BMW M6 Cabrio, and Jaguar XKR Convertible.
In keeping with its premium status the Spyder will likely come standard with the new 434hp 4.7L V8 engine from the more recent GranTurismo S. This means it will likely get Maserati’s new automatic gearbox (as opposed to the previous automated manual) and a Brembo brake package as standard.
Performance will likely be down on its hard-top sibling, however, as the Spyder will require extra reinforcements due to its missing roof. Remember, the regular GranTurismo already weighs in excess of 1,800kg so the extra weight of this reinforcement plus the automated folding roof system could easily push the drop-top past the two ton barrier.

Spy shots: Volkswagen Scirocco R20
The Volkswagen Scirocco R20 is going to make its debut alongside an R20T version of the Golf at this month’s Nurburgring 24 hour endurance race.
Key features of the car lifted from the Scirocco Study R concept include the aggressively styled bumper with larger intakes and unique fog lights, as well as the slightly wider fenders and lower ride height.
Don’t be fooled by the sponsor logos plastered over the car’s body. The prototype has been disguised as a race car but a peek inside reveals the car has its rear seats fully intact and there’s no roll cage, which means this is a production model.
Both the Scirocco and Golf R20 models are expected to deliver 270hp (201kW) and be fitted with a six-speed manual and AWD. A dual-clutch DSG is also expected to be featured as an option, allowing for 0-62mph (100km/h) sprint times in the five second bracket. Unlike its fellow Euro-competition - the Renault Megane RS and Ford Focus RS - the R20 will capitalize on AWD for superior performance and handling.
First sales should start in Europe by the end of the year, while American fans can still look forward to the Golf R20 as this car will be replacing the MkV R32 model and should be on sale in local showrooms also by the end of the year.

Ford plans to sell 5,000 to 10,000 Focus electric cars per year
Electric cars may be all the rage these days but making the technology cheap enough for mass-market will take some time. One of the leaders in this field is Ford, which is expected to have one of the first mass-produced all-electric cars on the market with its battery-powered Focus.
Arriving in 2011, the electric Focus is expected to be powered by a lithium-ion battery pack with a range of close to 100 miles. It won’t be cheap, however, as pricing will be set higher than a comparable petrol model, Ford’s president of the Americas, Mark Fields, revealed to Automotive News. This will "limit its appeal at least initially" but engineers are working to make the car "as affordable" as possible, he said.
Despite the high price tag the electric Focus is destined to bear, as well as the limited infrastructure for recharging, Ford hopes to entice around 5,000 to 10,000 customers a year. This figure is expected to rise as battery technology improves and production becomes cheaper, but for the first few years Ford will be chasing those numbers.
Ford is spending close to half-a-billion dollars to retool its Michigan SUV plant to build the global Focus. To help streamline costs for the electric Focus and remain up to date with new electric technology, the company is also part of a four-way ‘Eco-Partnership’ with organizations both in the U.S. and China.
Ford, Changan Auto Group and the cities of Chongqing, China, and Denver, Colorado, are exploring ways to develop projects to help further energy security and promote economic and environmental sustainability. Areas of focus could include developing electrified vehicle technologies, green city planning, efficient urban transportation and grid integration.

Spy shots: Lexus LF-A edges closer to production
The supercar that almost wasn’t, and still might not be, the Lexus LF-A, recently underwent a special kind of exhibition in Milan during Fashion Week, and now it has been spotted once again in prototype form ahead of a rumored debut at October's Tokyo Motor Show.
The LF-A has been spotted testing on a number of occasions, so it's well past the 'pure concept' stage, but its production future still remains murky at best. The Japanese company's investment in the LF-A at the recent Milan Fashion Week, however, lends credence to the idea that it is in fact going to be built, and this latest prototype features some new elements have never been seen before.
First and foremost are the new tail-lamps, which are likely to be the actual production units. Also new is the smoother body and integrated diffusers at the front and rear of the car.
If the LF-A does go into production, it is expected to cost more than $200,000 and sport a 5.0L V10 engine rated at over 500hp (373kW). Limited production is also the name of the game, with only about 1,000 units expected unless demand proves high enough to support more. A hybrid variant should also be available, but it’s unknown how much power this version will have or what affect the heavy batteries and extra motor will have on handling and weight.
The car's front mid-engine placement, along with a rear-mounted transaxle and rear-mounted radiators, should allow for excellent weight distribution, however. Lexus has billed the concept version of the car as having a top speed in excess of 200mph, and we have no reason to doubt the production version will reach these limits if sold unrestricted

Honda's Insight first hybrid to rank as Best-Selling Vehicle in Japan
As forward-looking and advanced in technology as the Japanese are perceived to be, they haven't been huge adopters of hybrid technology. But this month marked a tipping point, with the Honda Insight hybrid taking the top sales rank. It was the first time ever that a hybrid car held the lead in Japanese monthly sales.
The new Honda Insight was released in February 2009 in Japan. The Insight sold 10,481 units in April - an increase of 256% over March sales, and more than double sales during its debut month of February. Honda also pulled down the #2 sales spot, the first time that Honda has taken both #1 and #2 at the same time.
The Fit was the second-best selling car in Japan in April, riding a four-month streak at the top of the charts only to be bumped by the Insight. It was still a close issue, with the Fit selling 9,443 units.
Still, with falling auto sales in the US (including hybrids), a key market for hybrid vehicles, and US gas prices at very consumer-friendly low-levels, it will be a struggle for Honda, or any automaker with a hybrid on the market, to achieve the same thing in the United States. And Europe too will prove to be a challenge, given the market power of diesels in the largest markets there such as German, France and Italy.
Whether the dominance of the Insight in Japan will translate into strong sales elsewhere in the world has yet to be seen. The slightly larger yet equally fuel efficient Toyota Prius could be a major threat to the Insight's sales, though until the Prius I is released, the Insight has a definite price advantage.

Porsche Cayenne goes wider and lower with new MAFF Design ‘Muron’ Tuning Package
Porsche itself has recently gotten into the game of modifying its Cayenne SUV, so it's no wonder the vehicle has been a favorite of the tuner crowd for years. Though MAFF Design's latest creation may not have the exclusivity of the GTS Design Edition 3 revealed earlier in the year, it does have a flavor all its own.
Based on the 957 Porsche Cayenne, the MAFF Design Muron is primarily an appearance upgrade program. LED daytime running lights, an aggressive front, side and rear body kit with flared and vented fender wells to house the widened track. That's right, MAFF Design did do some mechanical work on the vehicle, spreading the width by 60mm up front and 80mm in the rear for an even more planted stance.
Combined with the lowering job - adjustable between 35 and 80mm thanks to an electronic lowering kit or optional Version 3 coilover, the Muron offers a new dynamic sensibility to Porsche's already very competent SUV. The MAFF portfolio includes some unique models able to develop over 700hp (522kW), which is one of the primary reasons engineers worked on the suspension of the big SUV.
Furthermore, no tuner Cayenne is complete without a set of huge alloy wheels, and MAFF doesn't disappoint, fitting a set of 22x10in alloys. Wrapped in beefy 295/30 rubber at all four corners, the driver will most likely run out of guts before the Muron runs out of grip.
For more details, see the PRESS RELEASE below:
MAFF Tuning Muron Porsche Cayenne
* “Muron” wide body kit for the entire Porsche Cayenne range
* Custom styled cockpit with Alcantara leather and carbon fiber inserts
* Multimedia system and sound system configured after a MAFF concept
* Power kit for the engine and sport exhaust tips designed by MAFF
* Retuned electronic suspensions and especially designed MAFF alloy wheels
Popularity turned the Porsche Cayenne into quite a common presence on the roads. This explains why the german model features in the portfolio of so many car tuners. Unfortunately, the big sales volume made the aftermarket industry follow in the foot steps of the stock car manufacturers. And this is because they started producing the so called exclusive, unique body kits in large series.
For all these reasons, MAFF Tuning developed the Muron project such as to offer the alternative of a truly custom interpretation of the super SUV. Thus, the Muron package represents a complex stylistic approach, which makes it more than sufficient for seriously amplifying the already powerful personality of the Cayenne.
But what really sets Muron apart from other tuners’ body kits is that MAFF proposes it as only the base on which the clients can build their fantasies. This is what actually means to offer custom services. This is what defines MAFF Tuning.
The Muron body kit is built of fiber glass components, in which elements of carbon fiber can be implemented. The package comprises of the following: front and rear spoilers, front grille with integrated LED daytime running lights, side skirts, roof spoiler, bonnet with dramatic scoops, masks for the head lights and tail lights, a discreet adornment for the boot lid, inserts of carbon fiber for the door handles, rear view mirror carcases with integrated LED signal lights and exhaust tailpipes covers. Each of these elements are a MAFF design and this is why the cars are adorned with the MAFF and Muron logos.
Even the light alloy wheels are a special MAFF design. And their dimensions vary according to the request of each and every client.
Also dedicated to the exterior of the car, the clients can choose a unique color or nuance for the paint, under the assistance of the specialized MAFF painters. The color mix and the painting process itself take place in the MAFF workshop, which is equipped with a high class painting booth.
For the interior of the car one can configure a virtualy unlimited number of layouts. This is possible due to the liberty MAFF gives to its clients regarding the choice of color, combination of materials, stitching design, embroiderments and inserts (carbon fiber among others). Only the finest leather types, like Alcantara, are used to tailor the cockpit. Even exotic alternatives like leather with a surface that imitates the carbon fiber texture have been selected by our customers. And the design, as well as the entire tailoring process are the work of the specialized department of the MAFF workshop.
The general feel of the lavishly styled cockpit is further nuanced with the help of ambiental lights, like the ones in the door sills which light up the Muron name.
And because every MAFF concept is meant to flatter each of the human senses, the configuration of the sound system is as elaborate and quality focused as the rest of the Muron project. So, depending on what the clients desire, there can be installed varied sound systems with first class components from brands like Alpine. MAFF tunes them and incorporates them in the cockpit’s design with great attention to detail and in a very elegant manner. For example, the subwoofer placed in the boot of the car is inside a resonance box upholstered like the rest of the cockpit. This box may even include a hidden storage aria.
There is also a multimedia kit, which includes the navigation system and is compatible with any audio or video format. On its main display, which can retract in the dashboard, are also shown the images captured by the video cameras integrated in the front and rear bumpers. Of course, the multimedia unit is correlated with the auxiliary displays, which can be implemented in the head rests, in the ceiling or in any other place, if the client’s fantasies dictate so.
The Muron project means personality, refinement, fantasy but we can not omit the fact that our object of work is a Porsche, a name acknowledged as being synonymous with performance and racing. Thus, MAFF set free even more of the potential this massive sports car has. Regardless of the engine version we work on, we can raise the power with up to 100 HP, without affecting the endurance of the engine. The power bonus is the result of the reconfigured electronic management of the engine, the fitting of bigger turbines and sportier admission systems and all the additional components for these.
The MAFF portfolio includes some unique models able to develop over 700 HP. This is why MAFF engineers also adjust the suspension of the car, aiming to improve its dynamic behavior. The ride height is consequently reduced by up to 8 cm. This is done by tuning the electronic management of the stock suspensions.

Alfa Romeo Milano (149) coming to Frankfurt Motor Show
Fans of Italian styling are anxiously awaiting Fiat and Alfa Romeo's return to the U.S., now that the alliance deal between the Italian auto giant and Chrysler has been signed. One of Alfa Romeo’s upcoming models is particularly important as it will form the basis of a new Chrysler sedan planned for U.S. production. The car is the 2010 Alfa Romeo Milano and it's scheduled to make its debut at this September's Frankfurt Motor Show. European sales begin in late 2009 - early 2010
Late last year at the Bologna Motor Show, Alfa Romeo CEO Luca de Meo confirmed that the car was in the works, and that it would arrive in the fourth quarter of 2009. Previous spy photos show that it is progressing well toward that deadline, though camouflage does hide the details of its form. The five-door layout and sharing of the new 8C-inspired design theme are evident, however.
It is expected to share Fiat’s C-Evo platform with the Lancia Delta and Alfa Romeo Bravo, contrary to earlier reports of the car getting an all-new platform. The same core engine range is expected, including a smallish 120hp (90kW) four-cylinder and ranging up to a 3.2L V6 good for 265hp (198kW). It will also share much of the same running gear. Sometime after the car's debut, a GTA model, like the MiTo's recently unveiled version, is also expected.
The new Alfa will come despite a planned halt in production to bring stock in line with demand. By splitting the existing 147 line into the MiTo and Milano, it allows the company to retain existing customers of the range while targeting new ones at both ends of the spectrum. The smaller and more efficient MiTo can play toward the younger and more urban crowds, while the Milano should scale well with the more affluent and suburban lifestyles. Adding to the Milano's more upscale direction is the inclusion of the four-wheel drive Q4 system, though the Q2 front-wheel drive will remain standard.

Spy shots: Bentley Continental Supersports in production trim
Bentley's flex-fuel Continental Supersports, Described by its creators as the “Extreme Bentley”, recently broke ground as the first ethanol-burner from the brand, and this week the car took a step closer to arriving in showrooms as the first production models have started undergoing real-world testing.
Having debuted in concept form at March’s Geneva Motor Show, the new Continental Supersports is scheduled to go on sale early next year as the carmaker’s most powerful and fastest production model ever.
It won’t be the most expensive Bentley - that honor falls to the Arnage - and the Azure is also more expensive, but a $267,000 base price tag for the Continental Supersports will put it about 33% above the Continental GT Speed's starting price of $203,600. Add on top the $3,700 gas guzzler tax (it's still a big, powerful, gasoline-capable car) and the $2,595 delivery fee and you're nudging up against $275,000.
Bentley says the price is fully in line with the car's nature, and notes that many features that are standard on the Supersports are pricey options on the rest of the lineup.
Delivering 621hp (463kW), the latest addition to the Continental GT range is capable of accelerating from 0-60mph in just 3.7 seconds and reaching a top speed of 204mph - despite its hefty 4,939lb (2,235kg) curb weight. Peak torque stands at 590lb-ft (800Nm). The 'Supersports' name is inspired by the original two-seater 3.0L Supersports model introduced in 1925, itself an evolution of the 3.0L Speed. The original Supersports was the first production Bentley to reach 100mph and was also recognized at the time for its race-inspired technologies.

Mercedes-Benz SL63 RS by Kicherer
Kicherer, car tuner from Germany, has unveiled the Kicherer SL 63 RS which is based on the Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG.
For those who don’t know, the Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG has already 525 hp and 630 Nm of torque, but it seems that this amount of power was too little and Kicherer decided to improve its performances. Kicherer tuned the standard 525 PS 6.2-liter V8 engine to produce 560 PS. The maximum torque has also increase from 630 Nm to 670 Nm.
At the exterior, the SL 63 RS features aerodynamic kit made of carbon fiber which consists of a new front spoiler, LED daylight driving lights, headlight blenders, a new front grille, a bumper on the front wings along with special mirror covers and a new rear diffuser. New exhaust system with four exhaust outlets has also been added.
To improve downforce, the Kicherer SL 63 RS is fitted with an integrated boot lid spoiler laminated with carbon fiber.
Kicherer also added a Vmax upgrade to the SL 63 which disables the electronic brakes at 250 km/h. To match the increase of speed, the car is equipped with ABC suspension system and new braking system.
The modified Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG stands on 20-inch light metal wheels wrapped with 255/30 tires at the front and 305/25 tires at the rear.
Inside, the Kicherer SL 63 RS features carbon fiber trim and a new sports steering wheel.

2009 Subaru Impreza WRX hatchback
This is the fastest and nicest version of the base WRX ever made.
Fans of AWD turbo cars are no doubt aware of the 2009 Subaru Impreza WRX's changes over the 2008 model, and those that aren't aware ought to be - this is a seriously improved vehicle. Fun, quick and comfortable, there are many reasons to like the latest WRX. Our week behind the wheel left us with mixed emotions, however.
The last Impreza WRX was all-new for 2008, but many lambasted the car for being too soft and too lethargic for its enthusiast position in the market. Subaru sought to turn that around with the 2009 car, and - for the most part - it has.
Borrowing bits from all over the Subaru lineup, the new WRX has an improved suspension, turbo, appearance and options profile. Only available with a five-speed manual, the new WRX means business, and once you get the new 265hp, 244lb-ft 2.5L Boxer rolling and the turbo spooled up, you know it. This car launches and pulls like a dream. Data acquired with our MaxQData GPS data logging system showed getting into the 5.2-5.3 second 0-60mph range was easy and repeatable without beating on the car or the clutch too hard.
But hit the first corner hard and you'll be surprised at the amount of body roll you're faced with. Push it to the limit and beyond, and all you'll find is understeer. Stomp the throttle at the apex of a 90-degree turn and you'll hear lots of front-inside wheel spin thanks to the open diffs on each axle. Something about the car still feels unfinished. The aftermarket will have a great deal of fun with this car, however.
Subaru says they've tightened up the suspension with higher spring rates, larger anti-roll bars and tuned dampers, but the car feels like it's been setup for a gravel rally stage, not the pavement jungle most of us face in the daily grind. On the other hand, the WRX maintains complete composure over even the most broken and busted tarmac the Midwest has to throw at it, accelerating, handling and braking without incident or issue.
In the aesthetic department, the latest WRX is as polarizing as ever - you'll either love it or hate it at first glance - and the racy Aero Package and STI-style grille add to the boy-racer effect for those that might prefer a more subdued exterior. Inside, the design is better, but materials are still lacking with hard plastics dominating and the cloth seats in our $26,800 hatchback test car needing significantly more bolstering in the thigh area, though the side bolsters were quite good.
Pricing is another issue. On the street, Mazda's Mazdaspeed3 - either last-gen or the new 2010 model - will likely offer as much or more real-world performance for less cash. Of course, those in northern climes will appreciate the Subie's AWD. Those that appreciate a hard launch and 60-foot times well below 2.0 seconds will too.
Fuel efficiency is nothing to write home about, but it's nothing to worry about either. We averaged 17-22mpg in our test car, in mixed driving, depending on how hard we pushed it. That's not stellar for a modern turbocharged hatchback, but it's not terrible for a car in this performance league, either.
All in all, the new WRX is a great improvement on the 2008 model, which was more econo-box than pocket rocket. With the power situation resolved and the options more suited to the car's intended purpose and market, all we can hope for is further work on the suspension to tune the car into a coherent whole, capable of mashing the competition both on road and off.
